DATA PROTECTION & RECOVERY

When it comes to data recovery, the best defence is to avoid requiring it in the first place. There are only three situations in which data recovery is necessary after a hardware or software failure.

Cases Requiring Data Recovery

  • You don't have backups
  • Your backup or restore mechanisms have failed
  • Your data cannot be re-created

Data Protection Tips

  • Keep regular backups and periodically verify them
  • Use an uninterruptible power supply (UPS)
  • Store computer equipment in a clean, cool, dry place
  • Listen for unusual noises like grinding or clicking

In Case of Damage

Non-physical damage typically manifests itself as blue or black error screens in Windows, especially on startup. This can usually be fixed using software alone.

Physical damage can be caused by a fire, flood, or other disaster, or by failure of one or more internal components. Often this is accompanied by grinding or clicking noises, but sometimes the computer will simply report that it is unable to find a hard disk drive at all.

In either case, shut down the computer immediately to avoid further damage. Contact us for an assessment to determine whether your data is recoverable in-house by software means, or if your computer will need to be sent to our partner, OnTrack Data Recovery. Ontrack has world-class facilities and is capable of recovering data even from heavily damaged disks.
